updatedb does this and I think it’s a desirable feature in an indexer. Indexing should be transparent and my files and directories shouldn’t have more recent atimes just because recollindex took a look when no-one else did.

You are right, and this was already reported. As far as I know, this is fixed by this change:

which you should be able to apply to 1.20, and which will be in future releases.

Of course, there is no way that this is going to work for files indexed by external filters like antiword, but it will at least preserve atime for mail files (which caused the main issue), and some other types.
